Fitting architrave around a double width door can seem like a challenging project, but it's simpler than you think. Follow this step-by-step guide to achieve a professional finish with ease.
Fitting double width door architrave
Step 1: Prepare the door frame
Using a combination square set to 10mm, mark a line along the door frame's edge on both sides. This ensures sufficient space for hinge installation. Continue marking along the entire frame to maintain consistent spacing for the architrave.
Step 2: Cut the header piece
Cut the header piece slightly under 2 metres in length. Mitre one end of the header at 45 degrees. This oversized piece provides a template for accurate marking of subsequent cuts. Mark the second mitre based on the door frame markings and cut on the mitre saw.
Step 3: Cut the uprights
Cut the upright pieces slightly over 2 metres in length in order to allow for accurate marking against the door frame without touching the ceiling.
Step 4: Mark the uprights
Offer up each upright to the door frame, ensuring it's flat against the wall. Mark the positions on the architrave according to the markings on the door frame. If the wall is uneven, try to scrape it smooth for a better fit.
Step 5: Mitre the uprights
Set the mitre saw to 45 degrees to the right. Place the architrave with the profile side facing you and cut. Set the mitre saw to 45 degrees to the left. Place the architrave with the profile side facing you and cut. Double-check the mitred ends against the pencil markings on the frame for a proper fit.
Step 6: Fit the header piece
Apply adhesive to the back of the header piece. Position the header according to the markings and fix it to the wall with a nail gun. Secure the ends first, then add a few nails in the center.
Step 7: Fit the uprights
Apply adhesive to the back of each upright and to the mitre joint where it meets the header. If using a two-part adhesive system, apply the activator to the header joint. Position the upright, ensuring the bottom is flat against the floor and aligning it with the pencil markings. Hold the upright in place, wait for the adhesive to set according to the manufacturer's instructions, and then secure it to the wall with a nail gun. Repeat the process for the opposite upright.
Step 8: Finish and touch-up
Apply caulk around the edges of the architrave. Fill and sand any nail holes and mitre joints. Your installation will then be finished, and you can then paint the architrave to match your desired colour.
