What is a Dado Rail?
A dado rail is a unique interior design feature that is somewhat similar to picture rails, but sit much lower down the wall. Traditionally they are part of the dado, or lower section of a wall, and are fixed to the perimeter of a room. They achieve a classical look when installed and tend to be found more often in older period properties.
Traditionally, a dado rail was used as a way to protect walls from furniture. Originally dado rails were known as chair rails, as they were installed on the wall at the height of the top of a chair, so that the furniture wouldn’t damage the plaster, paintwork or wallpaper. However, much like picture rails, dado rails are more of a design feature than a functional moulding.
