MDF Skirting Board FAQs
What are the benefits of MDF skirting boards?
MDF skirting boards offer a cost-effective and easy-to-install alternative to solid wood options like oak skirting boards. Made from industrial-grade, moisture-resistant fibreboard, they are highly durable and ideal for modern interiors. One key advantage is their smooth, defect-free surface, which allows for a professional finish when covering the joint between walls and floors. Unlike natural timber, MDF skirting boards won’t twist, warp, or crack over time. This makes them more reliable and longer-lasting, while still maintaining the visual appeal of real wood.
Do you offer bespoke MDF skirting boards?
At Skirting 4 U, we offer a bespoke MDF skirting board service for customers looking for a unique solution. We can replicate existing designs or adjust sizes to suit your specific requirements. All of our white MDF skirting boards are made to order, tailored precisely to your exact specifications.
Can MDF skirting get wet?
Generally, priming and painting skirting boards protects the MDF material underneath, so if they were to get wet, it would not cause an issue. For example, a puddle in the bathroom or a spilled drink on the kitchen floor that causes the skirting boards to get wet would not cause damage; provided the water is cleaned up quickly. However, if an MDF skirting board were submerged in water for a prolonged period, for example, during a flood, the MDF would absorb the water, and the damage would be irreparable.
It is also important to point out the difference between a skirting board being “wet” and a skirting board being exposed to moisture in the air. In kitchens and bathrooms, where the moisture content in the air is high, MDF skirting boards can be affected if they are made from standard-grade MDF. For more information, take a look at our article about bathroom skirting.
All of the MDF skirting boards manufactured by Skirting 4 U use moisture resistant MDF as standard. This is a premium grade of MDF specifically designed to withstand environments with higher-than-normal moisture levels in the air. Therefore, if you are concerned about installing MDF skirting, make sure you know whether the boards have been machined from moisture resistant or standard grade MDF to avoid any potential issues.
Does MDF skirting need painting?
MDF skirting boards need to be primed and painted; they cannot be stained, and leaving them in their raw state would not be particularly aesthetically pleasing.
You should apply a primer to MDF skirting boards to seal the surface before painting your top coat. Painting directly onto the MDF is unwise, as the material will absorb the paint and trap small fibres, which will harden with the paint and result in a furry, uneven finish.
